Let clients edit board items in the portal

This guide explains how to enable item editing so clients can update specific board item columns directly from their client portal.

Overview

What item editing does

Item editing allows clients to update certain columns of board items from within their portal. Clients remain in sync with your monday.com boards, making this feature ideal for:

  • Intake workflows
  • Collecting documentation and form data
  • Project collaboration and updates

Setup

Enable item editing

To allow clients to edit items:

  1. Open the Builder tab.
  2. Navigate to the board section you want to make editable.
  3. Toggle Item editing on by clicking the Lock icon.
  4. Repeat step 3 for all columns that should be editable.
  5. Publish your portal.

You enable editing at the board section and column level, giving you control over which parts of your portal are editable.

Client view

How editing looks for clients

Once item editing is enabled and the portal is published:

  • Clients will see editable fields directly in their portal with a dashed outline.
  • Clients can update these fields just as they would inside monday.com.

File columns have a 8 MB upload limit per file today. This may be expanded in future releases.

Limitations

Supported columns today

As of today, the following column types are supported for client editing in board sections:

  • Status
  • Text
  • Long Text
  • Number
  • Date
  • File

Other column types and board section layouts may be supported in future updates.
